ABOUT THE BOOK
NO SPOILERSIt is 1995, and fifteen-year-old Dan has spent his life on the road with his mother, Rain, who drinks, never stays anywhere for long and, when he asks where they are going this time, says "Wherever the wind takes us." Dan is gay, funny and devoted to fashion and Dolly Parton, and he has never had a real home. When Rain has Dan turn down a dirt road in the Tennessee foothills at a mailbox marked 1600 Green Gables, he meets the grandparents he never knew he had. Mawmaw is a warm, churchgoing grandmother who makes jams and jellies, and Randy is a stern church deacon who does not approve of him. By morning, Rain is gone. Dan refuses to hide who he is at school, at church or at the dinner table, and that brings bullies, arguments with the pastor and a grandfather who doesn't want him there. With new friends Lana and Rudy, a classmate named Birdie who calls him Carrottop, plenty of farm chores and Mawmaw's cooking, Dan has to figure out whether this place could ever feel like home.
