Then a radio station airs a message Decklee recorded before she died, admitting the time capsule is real, promising a three million dollar prize to whoever finds it, and daring her fans to follow a trail of clues hidden in her own songs. Convinced she has already cracked the first clue, Darren talks her coworker Kendall into driving her out of state to chase it down, hoping the money can help with her mother's medical bills and finally get her out of Mayberry for good. Chapters following Darren's hunt alternate with chapters narrated by Decklee herself, starting the night she left Mayberry as a teenager and following her rise to fame one era at a time.
