NO SPOILERSIn 2067, Hunter Graves, grandson of the first man on Mars, secretly bribes his way onto a freighter to confront his mother and twin sister at the family's Martian compound. A dust storm diverts him to Pax, the shabby, mostly underground United Nations base, and minutes after he arrives an alarm evacuates the station. Nobody logged his handprint, so nobody waits for him. The only other person left is Cleo, a hitcher who has lived on the base illegally for three months, and when she hears his mayday she figures that "Saving a billionaire could be life-changing." Then armed mercenaries walk in through a side airlock and start a countdown of just over seven hours, and the two teens soon overhear a plan to blow the base apart when time runs out. Told in alternating chapters by Hunter and by Cleo, whom Hunter believes to be an engineering student, the story follows their fight to outwit a professional crew and stay alive.
