How it works

Practice for the format.

Battle of the Books typically has two question formats. We drill both with two study modes, five mastery levels, and one account that follows your reader across devices.

New to the competition? Start with our guide to Battle of the Books.

Two question types

In What Book

A scenario, quote, or plot detail is presented. The reader picks which book it comes from.

Example

In what book do magpies outside a window sound just like R2-D2?

→ Bob by Mass and Stead

Book Trivia

A specific book is named in the question. The reader recalls a detail like a character, plot point, or fact.

Example

In Holes, what was the nickname of the boy who had Stanley's cot before him?

Barf Bag

Two study modes

Multiple Choice

Pick one of four answers. Immediate feedback with the correct answer and a brief explanation. Sticker drops when you earn one.

  • Quick 5, Classic 10, Challenge 20, or Marathon 40 (Pro)
  • Score and accuracy at the end
  • Keyboard shortcuts on web (1-4 to answer)

Flashcards

Tap to flip, then mark “Knew it” or “Didn't know it.” Cards your reader misses come back soon, and cards they know return later and later.

  • Built on spaced repetition, the study method proven to move facts into long-term memory
  • Time goes to the cards that need it, not the ones already mastered
  • Included with BookBright Pro

Focus each session where it helps most

Every round starts by choosing what to practice.

Whole list

Questions from every book on the active list, mixed together the way the real competition mixes them.

One book

Focus a round on a single book, perfect right after your reader finishes it.

Weak spots

BookBright remembers every question they miss and builds a session from exactly those, so practice time goes where it counts. Comes with Pro.

Five mastery levels

Every book on the list climbs its own ladder as accuracy and coverage build. Battle Ready at the top means they know the book cold.
