Every year, the Capitol forces each of its twelve districts to send two teenagers to compete in the Hunger Games, a televised fight to the death meant to punish the districts for a long-ago rebellion. When Katniss's twelve-year-old sister Prim is called at the reaping, Katniss volunteers to take her place, becoming District 12's female tribute alongside Peeta Mellark, the baker's son who once risked a beating to slip Katniss bread when her family was starving.
