While hunting deer deep in the Spine, Eragon stumbles across a smooth blue stone that turns out to be a dragon egg, and days later a hatchling dragon named Saphira breaks free of it. Dragon Riders once protected the land before Galbatorix betrayed and destroyed them, so raising a dragon in secret is a death sentence if discovered, yet Eragon cannot bring himself to abandon her. As Saphira grows and their bond deepens, strangers start asking questions around Carvahall about where the stone came from, and Eragon realizes his quiet life is about to end. Guided by the town storyteller Brom, who knows far more about dragons and magic than an old man telling tales by the fire should, Eragon leaves Carvahall on a path that will pull him into the growing war between the Empire and the rebel Varden.
