The story itself follows Buttercup, a farm girl in the kingdom of Florin, who falls in love with the farm hand Westley, loses him to a pirate attack, and is then kidnapped by a trio of hired criminals. On her trail comes a mysterious Man in Black who defeats each kidnapper in turn. When Buttercup is forced into an engagement with the scheming Prince Humperdinck, and Westley is captured and presumed dead, an aging wizard, a giant, and a Spanish swordsman consumed by a lifelong vendetta form an unlikely alliance to storm the castle before time runs out.
