When a historic hurricane sends a flood tearing through the valley, Sylvia sneaks back into the storm to help save the herd, wading into rising water full of things that have no business being there, a jaguar carrying a cub, a bird no one has seen alive in a hundred years, water that glows an eerie blue in the dark. In the middle of it all, she pulls a half-drowned boy out of the current, wraps him in her coat, and promises not to tell anyone she found him. That promise pulls her into a mystery about the boy, the flood, and the river itself, one far stranger and far bigger than she expects.
