NO SPOILERSBright Dawn is a young Inuit woman living in the village of Womengo, Alaska, where she helps her father Bartok hunt on the sea ice and drives his dog sled team, led by her beloved lead dog Black Star. When a blizzard strands Bartok on a drifting ice floe, he is rescued but loses four fingers and returns home a broken man, too afraid to go near the sea. The family moves inland to Ikuma, where Bartok slowly recovers and begins racing sled dogs. When a sled accident shatters his shoulder just months before the Iditarod, the famous 1,179-mile dog sled race from Anchorage to Nome, Bright Dawn must decide whether to take his place and race it herself.
