What he finds there — a hostile household full of strange relationships and a ghost-haunted bedroom — sends him back to the Grange sick and full of questions; his housekeeper, Nelly Dean, who grew up at Wuthering Heights, agrees to tell him the whole story of Heathcliff and the Earnshaw family, a tale of fierce childhood attachment, class humiliation, betrayal, and revenge that spans thirty years.
