NO SPOILERSThirteen-year-old Salamanca Tree Hiddle, known as Sal, has been uprooted from her beloved farm in Bybanks, Kentucky, and moved to a small house in Euclid, Ohio, after her mother left one April morning for Lewiston, Idaho, and did not come back. When her grandparents, Gram and Gramps Hiddle, propose a cross-country road trip to Idaho so they can visit her mother, Sal goes along, hoping against hope to bring her mother home by her birthday. To pass the long hours in the car, Sal tells Gram and Gramps the story of her new friend Phoebe Winterbottom, a girl with a vivid imagination who is convinced a mysterious lunatic is stalking her family after her own mother disappears without explanation.
