ABOUT THE BOOK
NO SPOILERSThirteen-year-old Boone Mason lives for hunting. His family has 46 wooded acres on a dead-end gravel road outside Pikesville, Michigan, a small farm town that has lost its tire factory, its lumber yard and more than 200 jobs. One November morning a farmer named Hank Atwater glimpses something big and gray dart across the road in front of his truck, and the huge tracks on each side show that a giant buck jumped the whole road. Once Hank spreads the news at the Main Street Cafe, the whole town is talking about the gray-tinted Ghost Buck. Boone gets his first compound bow for Christmas and vows to join the hunt for the legendary deer. He has plenty to deal with first. His businessman dad is always at work. Next door lives Jasper, a mean old hermit who patrols his land with his snarling dog, Mumbles, and chases hunters off at gunpoint. And Boone keeps wondering whether he has what it takes to make the shot. With help from his grandpa, an expert hunter, Boone spends the year getting ready for bow season and trying to believe in himself.
