ABOUT THE BOOK

NO SPOILERS

Cousins Otto and Sheed live with their grandma in Logan County, Virginia, where strange things happen all the time, and they have two Keys to the City to show for it. Otto, who writes every clue and deduction in a pocket notepad, is upset that their rivals, the Epic Ellison twins, just got a third key. On the day before school starts, he wants one more adventure, but Sheed would rather lie on Harkness Hill and watch the clouds. Then a tall man in a crooked stovepipe hat named Mr. Flux says he's a fan and gives them a heavy old camera that he promises will capture "the best time of your life." Otto snaps a picture of the town of Fry, and a stranger in goggles shoots out of a blue hole in the sky, kicks Mr. Flux, and yells at the boys to run. Back home, Grandma is frozen at the stove, though she can still talk. All of Fry has stopped, and the bickering cousins must team up with odd beings called Clock Watchers and track down Mr. Flux to get time moving again.

Riding into Fry, the cousins pass Dr. Medina's Wild Animal Hospital, where Mr. Reynolds the mailman is frozen mid-leap like he's jumping a fence. A python that slipped its cage is stuck mid-hiss inches from his toes, which the boys figure is a typical day at Dr. Medina's.
