ABOUT THE BOOK

NO SPOILERS

Six months after Alicia Angelos was found dead inside a prop coffin during the season-four finale of The Escape Game, a hit streaming show where teams of teenagers race through elaborate puzzle rooms, her younger sister Sierra is back for season five. Sierra has never been charged, but the public, and at first her new teammates, assume she did it. The producers drop her with no warning onto a team of three strangers. Carter Kelly is a shy, anxious math whiz famous online only as her confident cartoon avatar, Kick It Carter. Beck Matheson is a cheerful homeschooled kid who builds escape rooms and tastes sounds. Adi Parvesh is a sardonic bookworm whose fading movie-star mother arranged his spot. With a million-dollar prize on the line, Team Helsing has to learn to work together, but the season turns strange fast. A cow heart turns up in their fridge with a note repeating the words scrawled inside Alicia's coffin, an anagram of her name is hidden in the very first room, and an anonymous poster on the fans' website, calling itself the Real Game Master, claims to know who killed her.

SPOILERS

Every one of these has the same answer, and that is the point. In a real battle the question is read aloud with a dozen other books in play, and students have a few seconds to place it. Here is what a battle might ask about The Escape Game. Use them as a quiz, a trivia round, or BOTB practice.

Where in the book they come from

Opening

Ending
  1. Early in the book

In what book are the words "WE GET WHAT WE DESERVE" scrawled under a prop coffin's lid?

    ✓ Answer

The Escape Game by Marissa Meyer and Tamara Moss

Cruz spots the message on the underside of the coffin lid during the season four finale, and Sierra's first thought is that it must be an anagram. The same words turn up again six months later on a note skewered on the knife in a cow heart in the team's villa fridge.

  2. First half

In what book do the Death, Ten of Swords, and Justice cards light up as Roman numerals?

    ✓ Answer

The Escape Game by Marissa Meyer and Tamara Moss

The projected fortune teller describes three cards, and Beck, who once went through a tarot phase, names the first two after Adi picks out Justice. Their numerals XIII, X, and XI give the six-digit code to a box holding a giant skeleton key for the door.

  3. First half

In what book is a team raiding ice cream padlocked inside a walk-in freezer by a masked figure?

    ✓ Answer

The Escape Game by Marissa Meyer and Tamara Moss

A figure in a balaclava shoves Carter into the freezer and padlocks the door from outside, leaving the four of them shivering by the light of Beck's welcome-kit flashlight. Nobody knows who did it, and Beck wonders if it's the same person who left the cow heart.

  4. Second half

In what book does a girl break a horrified silence by praising a vandalized print's "planar symmetry"?

    ✓ Answer

The Escape Game by Marissa Meyer and Tamara Moss

A framed print of Sierra's painting Dance Macabre arrives at Villa #1, but someone has glued the team's photos over the dancers and painted a threat across the bottom. Carter's oddly timed compliment about the background makes Adi want to laugh and punch someone at the same time.

  5. Second half

In what book does a math whiz pop balloons numbered 3, 1, 4, and 15 with darts?

    ✓ Answer

The Escape Game by Marissa Meyer and Tamara Moss

Team Dread used their snag to make Carter the dexterity challenger, and at first she pops random balloons with no ticket. Then she realizes the host's clue meant easy as pi, not pie, and follows the digits 3.1415, choosing fifteen because she can't pop number one twice.

  6. Near the end

In what book does a boy on a library ladder use a sword to unveil a stained-glass window?

    ✓ Answer

The Escape Game by Marissa Meyer and Tamara Moss

In the Gothic castle dining hall of the vampire finale set, Beck links the guest list's last line, "Beneath the moonlight, we shall dine," to a black cloth draped high above the iron gate. He climbs the rolling library ladder, hooks the cloth's rope loop with the sword tucked in his belt loop, and the colored beams from the window show the team how to sort the jeweled nameplates on the table.
