NO SPOILERSMississippi Beaumont, called Mibs, is two days away from her thirteenth birthday when her family gets devastating news: her father has been in a serious accident on the highway and is unconscious in a hospital sixty miles away. In the Beaumont family, every child develops a supernatural ability called a savvy on their thirteenth birthday, and Mibs is convinced that her savvy will be the power to wake people up, just like her poppa needs. With her mother already at the hospital and a well-meaning preacher's wife planning an unwanted birthday party at the local church, Mibs decides she has to get to Salina Hope Hospital on her own, no matter what it takes.
