ABOUT THE BOOK
NO SPOILERSThis funny, gently spooky graphic novel follows seven-year-old Karen Brewer, who splits her time between her mom's little house and her dad's big house. Karen is sure the big house has a ghost, her great-grandfather Ben Brewer, who haunts his old room on the third floor. She also believes the old woman next door, whom she calls Morbidda Destiny, is a witch. When her second-grade class plans to tell scary stories at its Halloween party, Karen wants to tell the best one. She does not want her rival, Pamela Harding, to beat her. But Karen knows only bits and pieces of Ben's story. So she and her thirteen-year-old stepsister, Kristy, go looking for the truth, and in Ben's dusty old bedroom they find a diary kept by Ben's son, Jeremy. It says Ben's birthday was on Halloween and that every ten years he throws himself a birthday party at midnight on Halloween. This is one of those years, and Karen will be spending Halloween at the big house. Meanwhile, she and her friends plan to go trick-or-treating as characters from The Wizard of Oz.
