ABOUT THE BOOK
NO SPOILERSIt is August 1967, and Mel Vega is back at her family's log cabin on Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park, Montana, with her four-year-old brother, Kevin, and their grandfather, Pops. Mel did not want to come this year. Her mother died in a car crash last December, and Mel secretly believes the accident was her fault. One night, a skinny grizzly follows Mel to the cabin and smashes its paw through the window in the door. A volunteer at the ranger station says the bear, which the rangers call Old Slim, is harmless. But a young scientist named Steve, who studies grizzlies, warns that garbage is making the park's bears dangerous and that someone could get killed. Steve has heard strange rumors about the Granite Park Chalet, a hotel for hikers high in the mountains. So Mel, Steve, and Mom's best friend, Aunt Cassie, set out on an eight-mile hike to find out what is really happening there.
