ABOUT THE BOOK

NO SPOILERS

Matthew Cuthbert and his sister Marilla have never married, and they run a farm called Green Gables in the village of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island. Matthew is sixty and hired help is hard to find, so they send for an orphan boy from an asylum in Nova Scotia to help on the farm. When shy Matthew drives to the train station, though, the only child waiting is Anne Shirley, an eleven-year-old girl with two long red braids, sitting on a pile of shingles. Matthew can't bring himself to tell her about the mistake, so he drives her home while she chatters most of the way and gives new names to the prettiest places they pass. Marilla means to send her straight back, but Matthew would like to keep her. Anne has never had a real home. She also has a quick temper about her red hair, a huge imagination, a talent for getting into scrapes, and a lifelong dream of finding a "bosom friend."

    ✓ Answer

Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery

When three-year-old Minnie May falls ill with croup while her parents are away in town, Diana runs to Anne for help. Anne, who learned all about croup with the Hammond children, gives the little girl dose after dose of ipecac through the long night until she starts to get better. The doctor Matthew brings from Spencervale arrives at three o'clock, after the worst is over, and later tells the Barrys she saved the baby's life.

  6. Near the end
